MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. -- A Martin County middle school teacher and her son were arrested and charged with stealing $145,000 from a teacher's union fund, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
63-year-old Marjorie Garland was formerly the Treasurer of the Martin County Education Association (MCEA).
Bond for Garland and her 38-year-old son, Jason, is set at $1 million each.
Pam Miller, the president of the Martin County Education Association, released the following statement regarding the arrest:
"We are disappointed that our trust in our elected treasurer was misplaced and we will be strengthening our oversight into the financial workings. Members should be confident that their MCEA benefits, representation, and contract remain intact and full force."
