Have you ever wanted to live in downtown Stuart?
There is a plan in the works to add nearly 50 apartment rental units in the downtown area.
But, to make room for the proposed apartment complex on the triangular lot between Dixie Highway and Albany Avenue, some businesses could be bulldozed.
That includes the Crush Wine Bar, a scooter rental shop and two vacant buildings. Some of the buildings are more than 50 years old.
There is a lot of desire for more rentals in the downtown area," said Stuart City Commissioner Troy McDonald.
McDonald says some city leaders would like to see more living options to contribute to a work, live, play atmosphere.
Commissioners are considering approving a 99-year lease for the proposed developer.
The apartment complex would feature 48 units, on-site parking, additional public street parking and a swimming pool.
"It’s going to bring new people in that will live downtown and it will help make it more vibrant.”
But is there space for something like this? "The circle is busy enough!" said Stuart visitor Linda Larson.
She and her husband enjoy visiting the area for its small-town, historic feel. They worry that could be jeopardized.
"You like it the way it is. You don't know what change is going to bring so you're naturally skeptical," said James Larson.
But their daughter, a Stuart resident, can see where it might be good for the area.
"If the apartment complex was built in a manner that followed the rest of the architecture in town it could maybe be a positive.”
