A gas line break Tuesday morning closed some roads in downtown Stuart.

The leak occurred after the operator of a Bobcat struck a gas line, prompting the closure of Flagler Avenue from St. Lucie Avenue to Confusion Corner.

A worker at the scene said they were clearing flower beds, and there were no gas line markings where they were digging.

"I saw him pulling something yellow. I figured it was a root, cause you know I am not used to seeing gas lines, and he pulled and pulled and pulled and eventually it just snapped, and all you hear was like a snake hissing at you. You could taste it in your mouth, the back of your throat gets dry. I got a little light headed, so I had to walk away. they started shutting everything down,” said worker Michael Sanders.

Teco gas company closed off the line and is working to fix it.

The leak also caused some area businesses to be evacuated.

As of 9:18 a.m., police said the road was back open.
