Expert gives options in active shooter situation

Posted

More people are becoming interested in learning what to do in the event of an active shooter situation. Law Enforcement Expert Dennis Root hosted a seminar through his Public Safety Foundation to give locals a dose of reality.

When it comes to security, Derreck Ogden is usually one step ahead.

"I'm one of those people that doesn't like to sit with my back to the door, don't like to be somewhere where I can't get out," said Ogden, who owns and runs Word of Mouth Computer Electronics in Stuart.

There is a camera at every corner of his computer and electronics business and he has a clear view of all the exits.

"I don't ever expect to have an active shooter situation here, but of course nobody does. You don't expect it at the Civic Center during a Christmas party either," added Ogden.

Ogden sat in at an active shooter seminar in Stuart hosted by Law Enforcement Expert Dennis Root. It's a dose of reality Root offered through his public safety foundation.

"They want a body count, they want to kill people," said Root during the seminar.

Root says know where you are and where the exits are because your first option should be to run. If you can't run, hide.

"No matter where you are when you hide you still have to put his thought in your mind, what if they find me?" said Root.

Root says if you're found, fighting is the only option to reach your number one goal, survival.

"So when you start this fight, what's important now? Win," added Root.

Ogden is now taking the information back to his business and his family.

"That hypothetical situation that Dennis would be talking about is actually happening. It's not a hypothetical anymore," said Ogden.

Root stresses that you shouldn't be paranoid, but you should always be thinking about an escape route where ever you are.
