Firefighters were called to a brush fire in The Acreage Friday around noon.

It began near Northlake Boulevard and east of 140th Avenue off Hamlin Boulevard.

By late afternoon flames had scorched 60 acres.

Northlake and Hamlin boulevards in the area are closed to traffic.

The Florida Forest Service says there is a lot of spotting and the fire is jumping around a lot. Due to dry conditions, it could be some time before it is brought under control.

The forest service has four firefighting bulldozers working on containing the fire. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue and West Palm Beach Fire Rescue as well as the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

A forest service helicopter is also dropping water on the fire.

Crews are being rotated to avoid becoming exhausted.

So far, no homes have been threatened and no one has been injured.

The fire was 40% contained by 4 p.m.
