OKEECHOBEE, Fla. — Okeechobee County schools will be closed Monday as a result of the expected unfavorable weather conditions from Tropical Storm Eta.
The closure include all school-based after-care programs, activities and athletic events.
The Okeechobee County School District said the decision was based on the potential for flooding, sustained winds expected between 25 and 35 mph with wind gusts up to 45 mph, and the threat of possible tornadoes.
South Elementary School will open as a shelter beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday.
School officials said this day will need to be made up on a later date because five days were used to delay the start of the school year because of COVID-19.
