OKEECHOBEE COUNTY, Fla. — Social media posts and rumors created a scare in the Okeechobee County School District on Thursday and led many parents to keep their students at home.
"Attendance was down at multiple school sites and understandably so," said Superintendent Ken Kenworthy.
District leaders said they were tipped off about the rumors on Wednesday night and worked to track them down with the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office.
"We have no reason to believe there was a serious threat." Superintendent Kenworthy said, adding that no weapons were found at any of the schools.
The Superintendent said he believes the rumors may have stemmed from a racially charged posting on social media and then a fight at the high school on Tuesday.
The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office in a statement said there were arrests.
