Rescued horses making progress

Three horses rescued as part of an animal cruelty investigation in Okeechobee County are on their way to recovery.

The horses are showing improvement just one week since their rescue. But they still have a ways to go.

The Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation in Palm City is helping the three horses slowly put on weight. They each need to gain several hundred pounds.

The criminal investigation into their owner is moving forward after one of his horses died.

“This is by far the worst. Even for some of our volunteers and staff who have been here longer, most of them haven’t seen a case quite like this one.

“I think they’re doing well and it’s just going to be a slow process," said Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation barn manager Nancy Dunn.

It is hoped the horses will eventually be adopted out.

The Okeechobee County Sheriff says he's working hard to make sure cases like this don't fall through the cracks again.
