A 71-year old man is preparing to spend the rest of his life in prison after rapes more than 40 years ago in Palm Beach County.

John Arthur MacLean of Pompano Beach, Florida, was found guilty of raping two women in Boca Raton in the 1970s.

In one case, a 15-year-old girl was sexually battered by an intruder at a home where she was babysitting in October 1976.

In another case, a woman in February 1977 was sexually battered at her house by an armed intruder while her two young children were inside the home.

The cold case was re-opened in 2011, and MacLean was charged in 2012 in both cases.

In two separate trials, investigators connected MacLean, a registered sex offender, through DNA.

A Palm Beach County judge handed down the life sentence on Monday.

MacLean had a criminal history that included arrests in Broward and Miami-Dade counties dating back to 1979 for robbery, burglary and sexual assault/kidnapping.

He also had an arrest history in Arizona that included arrests of sexual exploitation of minor, armed burglary, trespassing, possession of burglary tools and transportation of stolen property in the early 1990s.
