The Florida Department of Transportation is extending the Interstate 95 express lanes in South Florida to southern Palm Beach County.
A current phase of the project is extending the lanes from SW 10th Street in Broward County to Glades Road in Boca Raton. Two express lanes will be constructed and I-95 will be widened by one lane.
Crews have been working since January and have worked on building new sound walls and moving vegetation.
FDOT project spokesperson Andrea Pacini said crews will start widening in July.
“Work will only be occurring on the northbound side for the next year to year and a half," she said.
Pacini said in order to avoid impacting drivers the construction crews will work at night and not on weekends.
“We also coordinate closely with all affected municipalities to make sure we are not affecting special events, football games at FAU stadium, things of that nature,” she added.
The project is expected to be complete in 2021 and the next phase from Glades Road to Linton Boulevard in Delray Beach will start in 2020.
