Polio-like disease causing concern

It's a busy time of year at West Boca Medical Center.

"My kids are getting their annual checkups and flu shots," Greta Gillis said.

With two children Gillis is no stranger to the doctor's office and Thursday she learned about Acute Flaccid Myelitis.

A disease recently making headlines as some are calling it a polio-like virus due to the symptoms.

"It is scary because we can't pinpoint exactly what's causing it," Dr. Celina Moore said.

Dr. Moore says she's had her eye on the disease since 2014 when the CDC first recognized the condition.

"We're seeing it every other year and now we are having a spike right now that started in September," she said.

Right now the CDC is investigating at least 62 possible cases of AFM. At least one of those is right here in Florida.

Dr. Moore says kids four and younger are most at risk, and if a parent notices their child losing strength in a body part they should contact a doctor immediately.

"It's what we think is a virally induced complication that attacks a spinal cord," she said.

AFM is considered a mystery virus so there's no known cure, but Dr. Moore suggests parents and kids should stay up to date on vaccines and wash their hands thoroughly.
