One person is dead and another seriously injured after a multi-vehicle crash in Boca Raton Monday afternoon, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident happened shortly after 5 p.m.  on northbound I-95, south of Palmetto Park Road.

Officials say 55-year-old James Ferrauilo of Pompano Beach was driving northbound on I-95 approaching Palmetto Park Road when the driver ahead of him, 35-year-old Dawn Knowles-Gasset of Pompano Beach, made a complete stop due to stopped traffic ahead.

According to FHP, Ferrauilo failed to stop and swerved to the left to try to avoid the collision but rear ended the other vehicle and both vehicles spun out of control.

Boca Raton Fire Department  was on the scene and removed Ferrauilo from the vehicle prior to the interior compartment of his vehicle became engulfed. He was transported to Delray Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The other driver, Knowles-Gasset, was also transported to Delray  Medical Center in serious condition.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
