The Boca Raton Police department has been teaching seniors self-defense with 'Cane-Fu' classes.
The six-week classes illustrate how to defend yourself with a cane or umbrella.
Officer Gwynn Friter is in her third year teaching the class and said the class is all about helping seniors be more aware and giving them tools to use if someone were to attack them.
“There is no one thing that will ever guarantee you will not be a victim, however, we talk about having a toolbox and having as many tools in it as possible,” said Friter.
The students in the class were learning how to fend off an attacker and keep someone from taking their cane away from them.
“It is fun, but empowering knowing you can do this stuff and catch them off guard,” said Kathy Fearnley.
The class is free and Boca Raton Police will have information on their websitewhen their next “Cane-Fu” class starts.
