It was a special birthday celebration for one Tri-County Animal Rescue volunteer in Boca Raton Tuesday.
Lucille Zahniser celebrated her 96th birthday, and the staff threw her a surprise party.
She’s been volunteering with the dogs at Tri-County for more than 20 years.
She says all of her family in Florida has either passed or moved away so the people at Tri-County are her extended family.
Zahniser says: “As you get older sometimes you feel you don’t belong because there’s nobody there that's part of you or near you, so it’s just a wonderful gift to have the friendship that the people do offer here in Florida and it means a lot to me.”
Her secret to a long and healthy life? She says she reads food labels and if she doesn’t understand the ingredients, she doesn’t eat it.
Zahniser volunteers twice a week at Tri-County Animal Rescue. She says she enjoys talking to the dogs and says they make great companions.
“You're never too old to volunteer," Tri-County Animal Rescue Executive Director Suzi Goldsmith said. "Lucille is an inspiration to everyone here. At 96, she's still valuable to the community."
