BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A Boynton Beach police officer struck by a vehicle two weeks ago while chasing a shoplifting suspect has been discharged from a hospital.
Police said officer Greg Wertman was in foot pursuit of the suspect at Gateway Boulevard and Congress Avenue near Renaissance Commons when a car traveling eastbound on Gateway Boulevard hit him.
Police said it did not appear the driver who struck the officer did anything negligent.
Wertman had been hospitalized in serious condition. The department said he's made enough progress to continue with outpatient rehabilitation.
"Greg and his family asked us to pass along his thanks for the continued outpouring of support and prayers from the community. They are indebted to the doctors, nurses and therapists at Delray Medical Center, who have worked tirelessly on his recovery these past two weeks," Boynton Beach police posted on social media.
