BOYNTON BEACH, Fla.-- The Boynton Beach commission will look at preparing for new development at the Boynton Beach Mall.

Tuesday night commissioners will vote to change the future land use to mixed land use.

“The mixed-use category will allow just as it sounds, a more a variety of mixed land uses,” said Boynton Beach Development Director Michal Rumpf.

Rumpf said the city recognized the need to reinvent the Boynton mall and mixed land use would allow residential development along with more “lifestyle shopping.”

Changing the land use is the first step in giving the property owner the chance to develop the area.

“I feel like we are lacking a couple things,” said Marc Lahens.

Lahens said he comes to the mall to buy shoes, but would love to see a place to hang out with friends and family.

“Maybe like a Boomers, like go-karts or something like that,” he said.

Others agree that some development is needed at the mall.

“Some more restaurants, make it kind of cool, some more boutiques, places both guys and girls love,” said Manasse Dornot.

Rumfp says no project has been submitted, but changing the land use allows options.

Commissioners will look at the ordinance on Tuesday. If approved, it will then go to the state for review.
