On Sunday at approximately 1:10 a.m., a Florida Highway Patrol trooper was dispatched to a man walking on Interstate 95 near Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach.
Upon his arrival, a physical altercation ensued and the trooper deployed his stun gun which was ineffective and the subject was subsequently shot.
The subject has been identified as 56-year-old David Eric Ufferman from Delray Beach.
"He's a real nice guy," said neighbor Lorenzo Goodman. "I just can't believe it. He's a good guy. He'd play with my son when my son was young. I've known him for a long time."
The trooper is on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an investigation.
The State Attorney's Office will determine whether criminal charges are appropriate.
