New development has caused a divide in Delray Beach. Commissioners approved new development at Swinton and Atlantic avenues.
The Midtown Project worries some that it will diminish the historic value of the area.
“This will re-energize that area,” said Delray Beach Mayor Cary Glickstein.
Developer Hudson Holdings plans to build an underground parking garage, apartments, stores, retail space and a city garden.
The plans will remove some historic buildings but others will be revitalized.
“It creates a false sense of history in a city block and re-creating over a parking garage,” said John Miller with the Delray Historical Society.
Glickstein said overall the project will help boost the area and is a perfect balance of new and old.
The city approved the project with some conditions, a big one being the building on Atlantic can only be three stories.
