Plein Air artists invade Delray Beach

Wherever you look in Delray beach, you'll see artists painting outside.

They are called plein air artists, and are here for the 2nd annual Plein Funfest.

Artist Lorrie B. Turner says, "Plein air is a French term meaning to paint out in the plain air. I've been painting outdoors since 1970-something…so Shhh…"

Water colors, oil, acrylic, pastels, whatever the tools the artists decide to use - what better place to paint outdoors than south Florida.

"I moved from New York to south Florida because I can paint outdoors 365 days out of the year and I don't have to paint snow…(laughs)," Lorrie says.

Fifty artists from around the country are competing for cash prizes Saturday. They have only 6 hours to paint a winning masterpiece from scratch, outside in Delray beach.

"This is spontaneous, this is from the heart, connection eye-min-hand…heart on a canvas," says Pati Maguire of  Plein Air Palm Beach.

Finished or not, the paintings will then be on display Saturday afternoon for the judges and public to see.

The artwork then goes up for sale after the winners are picked.

"Tthe idea is to get like-minded artists who enjoy being outdoors, who have a passion for painting, come together, paint," Pati says.

The artists and their work will be scattered all over Delray beach again on Saturday,

A picture perfect day in a picture perfect city.
