The Delray Beach Police Department is keeping the memory alive of a former officer. Christine Braswell was killed in a motor scooter accident last April.
A scholarship fund was set up in her name and would go to future police officers.
The first recipient of the scholarship is Luis Bonet, who is currently in the police academy to become a Delray Beach officer.
“She was very tenacious, very strict,” Bonet remembers Braswell as his former drill instructed while he was an Explorer.
“She was always striving for young kids, mentoring them and that is one thing I am looking forward to doing with this city,” Bonet said he wants to help mentor and teach just like Braswell.
Braswell’s mother Barbara Braswell said Bonet was the perfect person to get the scholarship.
“That was her, she loved being a police officer, she loved sniper, she loved SWAT, she loved her brother and sisters here, but her true, true love was teaching,” she said.
The scholarship will pay for the academy for Bonet, who should graduate in October.
