DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- One of the fastest-growing sports in America is set to have a tournament in Delray Beach this week.
The Delray Beach Gunther Pickleball Classic will host hundreds of players from Dec. 5 to Dec. 8 at the Delray Tennis Center.
“Pickleball is tennis, badminton and ping pong, played on a smaller tennis court,” said Delray Pickleball Club President Glenn Kessler.
The club started three years ago with six players and Kessler said they now have more than 300.
This is the third year the club is hosting the tournament and will have over 500 players.
“The bigger the tournament the more fun it is,” said tournament director Pam Garcia.
Professional pickleball players will be playing in this week’s event. Local mother-daughter team Leigh and 12-year-old Anna Leigh Waters said they are excited to play at home again.
“We just won Nationals at the pro level as a mother-daughter team,” said Waters.
The tournament starts at 8 a.m. on Dec. 5 and entry is free to the public. Scheduling information can be found here.
