DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- Authorities are investigating a fatal Delray Beach police officer-involved shooting at 648 West Drive.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is the investigating agency.

Acting Delray Beach Police Chief Mary Olsen says police dispatch received a report of a man with a gun threatening his mother at about 6:30 Saturday morning.

When officers arrived, the parents were gone and they located the agitated suspect, 38-year-old John Randolph.

Police say officers attempted to communicate with Randolph for quite some time, but he was not cooperative.

At around 7:50 a.m., Randolph ran out of the house brandishing a handgun. At least one Delray Beach police officer fired at him, hitting him.

Delray Beach Fire Rescue was called to the scene and pronounced him dead a short time later.

No officers were injured during the incident. Investigators are trying to determine whether or not Randolph fired at officers.

According to police, Randolph and the address were previously known to police and mental illness is part of the investigation.
