WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally beating an elderly man while stealing his $26,000 watch.

Local news outlets report that a Palm Beach County judge sentenced 28-year-old Kareem Andre Williams on Thursday after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder, burglary with assault or battery and robbery.

Authorities say Williams spotted 80-year-old Albert Honigman wearing the gold Rolex at a Boca Raton mall in January 2013. Turnpike surveillance videos show that Williams followed Honigman back to his West Boyton home and then attacked the older man in his garage.

Honigman died two days later. Photos taken after the beating show Williams wearing the watch.

Defense attorneys said Honigman's daughter traded the watch to Williams for drugs.
