Fort Pierce gas outage costing families money

Posted

FORT PIERCE, Fla-- Hundreds of Fort Pierce families were still without natural gas Wednesday night.

Fort Pierce Utilities Authorities now says there is no real timetable for when service will be completely restored.

The outage happened Saturday afternoon due to a low pressure issue.

Nearly 2400 customers were impacted. Four full days later, according to FPUA's website, less than 15 percent have their gas back.

The outages has left many families without a way to cook at home, and its starting to take a toll of them financially.

For the last four days, Diane Johnson-Chaney has been using the microwave to get warm water.

'This morning they said we'd have gas by today. It's four days and we have no gas."

Diane is one of the 2400 customers who were impacted by the natural gas outage.

"Every night, every morning you're taking cold showers. You've got to build yourself to take cold shower," said Johnson-Chaney.

Not only does she not have warm water, but she has no gas to use her stove.

"I don't cook in the microwave. I have no way of preparing food in the microwave."

After four days, it's no longer just a burden. It's becoming expensive, especially for low income families who don't have the money to eat out every day.

"I can't call them with my utilities due on the 22nd and say 'Hey, I can't pay my utilities because I had to eat out for a whole week.' They're not going to accept that."

Crews from across the state are working to restore gas to these families. They are now going door to door to access the meters and appliance.

FPAU says it connected critical customers first like nursing homes and schools before moving to other customers.
