A Fort Pierce family is especially grateful this Thanksgiving after an officer saved the life of their 6-day-old infant one week ago.

Police say Officer Jorge Goz saved little baby Alybree-Dejeus Cerda on Nov. 15 when she started choking, then stopped breathing and her lips turned blue.

Her parents started to drive her to the emergency room. But police say when Officer Goz heard the emergency call, he had a dispatcher tell the couple to pull over so he could help them.

Goz reached the family and began doing first aid on the baby, performing several back thrusts to eventually remove a substance that was blocking the infant's airway.

The baby was taken to the hospital and released the next day. Police say she's doing just fine.

For his efforts, Officer Goz has been nominated to receive the Fort Pierce Police Department Life Saving Award.
