Fort Pierce police are working to identify the person who shot a gas station clerk and robbed the store at gunpoint.

The crime was captured on surveillance video.

Family of the victim, for now, asked WPTV not to identify him. His family and coworkers call the crime a bold act.

The BP gas station is located right along U.S. 1, where there is the potential for more witnesses, and it is right across the street from the police department.

But, that didn’t stop the crime.

Coworkers and family of the victim say the store clerk was standing outside around 9:30 at night Monday, taking a smoke break.

They say a masked man walked up to him, fired a gun shot in the air and then shot the clerk in the leg.

Surveillance video shows the shooter struggle to open the cash register. Then, you see him leave the store and come back inside while dragging the clerk to get him to help opening the register.

The clerk’s sister, who also did not want to be identified, said, “I was pretty upset, I was crying. Because we didn’t know how bad the outcome was.”

His injury was not life-threatening, but, he suffered multiple surgeries.

“He shattered his femur bone, so they had to do surgeries and put rods in to put it back together,” the sister said.

The clerk could be out of work for weeks recovering, and has a family to support.

“Just thankful he’s alive,” the sister said. “You don’t think about the bad stuff going to work, just making the money and coming home."
