FORT PIERCE, Fla. — St. Lucie County commissioners made a big decision Tuesday morning about the future of the Port of Fort Pierce, one of the lowest performing ports in Florida.

In November, commissioners selected Derecktor of Dania Beach to lease the land from the county and operate a mega yacht repair center.

Initially, negotiations were set to take no more than three months, but that time frame has passed.

On Tuesday, commissioners voted 5-0 to move forward with the Derecktor plan.

John Koenig, a spokesperson for Derecktor, said the company is committed to moving their headquarters to Fort Pierce, which he said will bring hundreds of jobs to the area over the next few years.
