Rescued manatee to be released in Fort Pierce

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is scheduled to release a manatee back into the wild in Fort Pierce Wednesday afternoon.

“Leia” the manatee was rescued on March 18 from the southwest corner at the South Causeway (Seaway Drive) in Fort Pierce and weighed only 150 pounds. She underwent rehabilitation at the Miami Seaquarium.

The release will occur at 2 p.m. at Moore's Creek, which is located next to the Manatee Observation and Education Center in Fort Pierce.
