Treasure Coast Food Bank is making Thanksgiving special for families in need

Students from Chesterbrook Academy in Port Saint Lucie are donating non-perishable food to the Treasure Coast Food Bank.

"It's cool to see people come over and give out food to people," said 11-year-old Peyton Salerno who donated food.

The food will help make Thanksgiving special for hundreds of families in need on the Treasure Coast.

However, Judy Cruz says not everyone is getting a frozen turkey. "You know there's never enough turkeys and we are short turkeys this year as we have been in the past, but our goal here is to provide a holiday meal."

So far the food bank has distributed 12,000 boxed meals. Not all with the traditional frozen turkey.

"Wonderfully plump roasting chickens so families will be receiving chickens," Cruz said. "We were able to provide stuffing and string beans and corn and carrots and muffin mix."

Thanksgiving is just days away, and the food bank is already hoping it will be able to give families frozen turkeys for Christmas.

Pat Griffith is thankful for the food she received today. "I appreciate this place and anybody who give people food that don't have the resources this is a very nice blessing."
