ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said a man who was shot Friday morning has died.

The sheriff's office said deputies responded to a call of a possible burglary around 6:45 a.m. and found a gunshot victim, identified as 31-year-old Gary Eugene Knight, Jr., on the ground in front of a home in the 3000 block of West Dixie Blvd.

"Mr. Knight had been shot several times," said Sheriff Mascara at a Friday afternoon news conference.

The sheriff said Knight underwent surgery, but eventually died from his injuries. Knight knew the gunman, according to the sheriff.

"This appears to be an isolated incident, and our detectives are currently following up leads and processing evidence," said Sheriff Mascara.

The sheriff said Knight tried to get help from a homeowner before collapsing on the ground.

"When our deputies arrived, they found him in the front yard, and his attempt was to try to get help from the homeowner at that residence," said Sheriff Mascara.

Investigators are looking for information about who Knight was with in the hours leading up to the shooting. No suspects or arrests have been announced.

"West Dixie is a dead end street, so really there's no business to be at a dead end street unless, most likely, you're doing some type of illegal activity," said Sheriff Mascara.
