PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Crews are still on the scene of a gas leak in Port St. Lucie Thursday morning, prompting road closures.
The incident started Wednesday evening in the 700 block of NE Prima Vista Blvd.
Prima Vista Boulevard between Riomar Court and US 1 is still closed.
At 10 a.m. Thursday, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said it could be another five hours before the road reopens. As of 3 p.m. Thursday, the road remained closed.
Florida City Gas said the line was damaged as a result of work that a third party contractor was performing in the area.
Workers are trying to fix it without shutting the gas off, so they don’t have to go to each individual home to turn everyone’s gas back on.
Florida City Gas is at the scene making repairs.
According to officials, five homes had to be evacuated and several others sheltered in place Wednesday night.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post Wednesday night that affected residents in the area may park their vehicles east or west of the closure and walk home.
This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
