More military flares found on Hutchinson Island

It appears that military ordnance on Hutchinson island Thursday was not an uncommon discovery.

Deputies called in crews from Patrick Air Force Base in Brevard County to assist after finding several flares along the beach in St. Lucie County Friday.

Thursday construction crews unknowingly moved a buried military ordnance forcing evacuations of several homes north of Jensen Beach.

After finding several more flares Friday, deputies say this could be a disposal site dating back to World War II.

Andy Brady at the Fort Pierce National Navy UDT SEAL Museum says these beaches are where the Navy's special warfare was invented.

Old munitions were buried along the Treasure Coast and over the years first responders have been taking care of them.

"Backed off the last several years, but years ago people would find landmines, hand grenades, bullets, all kinds of training devices," said Brady.

He says more of these ordnances could be found in the future.

Law enforcement did not feel the need to evacuate the area Friday.
