Gary Anthony Burnette, 26, is a first year band director at St. Lucie West Centennial High School who actually won an award for teacher of the year.

He's now accused of having sexual relations with a 15-year-old female student.

Parents received a recorded phone call Monday evening from the school's principal saying Burnette was arrested and fired.

Port St. Lucie police say the investigation actually started Monday when a student contacted a school resource officer saying the alleged victim was having a sexual relationship with Burnette.

Police say they confirmed the allegations with the 15-year-old female student.

Burnette was then questioned by police, confessed and was arrested in a matter of hours.

Police say they are hopeful there are no other victims but they encourage parents to speak with their kids and report any suspicions.

Burnette's bond was set at $600,000 during a hearing Tuesday morning.

If Burnette makes bond, the judge has ordered a pre-trial monitoring, and he will be ordered to wear a GPS tracking device.

Burnette faces charges of lewd behavior and sexual battery.

Anyone with information related to the accusations made against Burnette are asked to call Port St. Lucie police at 772-871-5000 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-8477 to remain anonymous.
