An apartment fire has disrupted the lives of several people in Port St. Lucie.
It broke out at Waterleaf Town Homes in the 1900 block of Hillmoor Drive Tuesday afternoon, according to Port St. Lucie police.
Firefighters said it was contained to one unit but smoke damaged apartments adjacent to it. None has power.
Investigators learned a pot of hot oil was left on a stove by someone who had left the apartment.
The building was declared uninhabitable due to the extensive damage, officials said.
Police later said the Red Cross was assisting six families who were displaced.
Police said several dogs and cats were also removed.
No injuries were reported, police said.
