PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — The Port St. Lucie City Council voted Monday night to approve a major pay raise for itself and the mayor.
The raise will not take effect until the November 2020 election when a new council is seated.
The mayor’s pay will go from just under $50,000 to about $80,000, equal to the pay of St. Lucie County commissioners. A councilperson’s pay would go from about $35,000 to about $48,000, documents show.
According to written statement from Asst. Communications Director Sarah Prohaska, the measure was approved with a 4 -1 vote, with Councilwoman Jolien Caraballo voting against it. It was passed as written in the recommendation.
City documents show the pay was last negotiated in 2001, and the city’s population has more than doubled since then.
