A 14-year-old boy is in stable condition after being struck by a vehicle while he was biking home from school, according to St. Lucie County Fire District.
The crash happened at approximately 1:50 p.m. at the intersection of Walton Road and Lennard Road, about a quarter of a mile from Port St. Lucie High School, where police say the teen is a 10th grade student.
Police say the teen was passing through the intersection southbound on Lennard Road when he was hit by a Honda Sedan passing through the intersection eastbound on Walton Road on a green light.
The driver of the vehicle stayed on scene and, at this point, is not facing charges.
Nizar Asker works at the nearby Wester gas station.
Right after the crash, he says he saw people running out of his store toward the street. That's when he noticed the teenager on the ground, critically injured.
Police say he was not wearing a helmet and fractured his skull.
“Everybody started running to the kids. I was stuck in the store but I called the cops and tried to do my part,” Asker said.
Police say the driver of a Honda sedan did not see the teen in the road in time to avoid the crash.
“Just got to pay attention. That’s all that went wrong today,” Asker said.
Dozens of high school students cross the roadway daily, according to Asker. Police say there is only a crossing guard for middle and elementary students.
Asker wonders if that should change.
"Maybe getting a cross guard would help, but you’ve gotta pay attention.”
