UPDATE: 10:30 p.m.

Police have used tear gas to try and get an armed man to surrender at the Harbour Palms apartment complex in Port St. Lucie but so far, he is refusing to do so.  The standoff between the man and police began around 4 p.m. when calls came in that a man had been firing a gun in the community.  When officers arrived, the man indicated he wanted to commit "suicide by cop."

Police have blocked off the entrance to the complex off Walton Road.  A string of police cars including a SWAT vehicle line the roadway.  Between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., there were a number of loud bangs heard.

For residents of Harbour Palms, it has been a long and frustrating evening.  Many of them wait for word at the 7-Eleven across the street.  John Steiner got off work early and was looking forward to some extra time at home.

"Figured I'd go home, grab something to eat.  But I'm stuck out here," said Steiner.

Worried parents wondered how their kids were doing.  One mother was visibly shaken after the loud bangs were heard, asking an officer to allow her to go inside. By 10:30 p.m, many people had been waiting to go home for more than six hours.

"Crisis negotiators have been in contact with him (the armed man) sporadically.  What we're trying to do is come to a peaceful resolution here," said Port St. Lucie Sgt. Frank Sabol.

The armed man is believed to be in his early 60's. There is no one else in his apartment that we know of.  He has not made any demands of police.  They are asking members of the public to avoid the area of Walton and Village Green Drive.
