The St. Lucie County Fire District says one of its first responders will be honored for rescuing a neighbor from a burning vehicle.
Captain Colin Dewar was returning home after his night shift November 29 when the district said he heard the sound of an explosion.
He ran outside and saw flames coming from an RV so he grabbed fire extinguishers and put out the fire, the district said.
He noticed a person was inside so he then returned to his garage and got a specialized saw and helped remove the person with the aid of another engine company that arrived on the scene, officials said.
The patient was taken to a burn hospital.
“Captain Dewar’s selfless act of heroism exemplifies the commitment to the public’s safety that our firefighters carry out every day," St. Lucie County Fire Chief Nate Spera said in a statement.
The Fire District will recognize Captain Colin Dewar with the Service to Family Award December 21.
