BELLE GLADE, Fla. -- Neighbors stepped up to help a family of 10 in Belle Glade, bringing clothes, toys and even a Christmas tree to the family.
The family says on Dec. 14, less than two weeks before Christmas, they lost everything. The mother went to pick up a child at the bus stop. Through a translator, Elizabeth Maya told us she could see smoke. Maya said,
"She said she went inside to get the kids and she wanted to see what happened, but she saw smoke coming out of the stove."
No one was hurt. But they lost everything except the clothes on their back. The family can't believe their community came together to literally put a roof over their heads, putting back the Christmas spirit in their hearts.
Verenice Sanchez, their daughter said, "I'm really glad they gave me a house and have a better life."
Morgan McNeill heard about the family needing to help, and recruited her friends to donate toys. The 13-year-old said, "They were all happy, so it made me feel good."
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue also donated toys and gift cards to the family.
