EARLIER STORY:

A Broward County deputy from West Palm Beach who died in a crash last month while on duty was laid to rest on Thursday.

A funeral service for 30-year-old Benjamin Nimtz took place at Calvary Chapel in Fort Lauderdale.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said Nimtz was responding to a domestic dispute in Deerfield Beach on July 21.

As Nimtz drove through the intersection of Military Trail and SW 10th St. with his siren and lights activated, his patrol car collided with a Toyota Tundra.

Nimtz and the driver of the truck were taken to Broward Health North, where the deputy tragically passed away.

Nimtz, who lived in West Palm Beach and had been with BSO since March of 2018, is survived by his wife and two children.

A GoFundMe page was established to support his family.

BSO said the driver of the Tundra, who suffered non-life threatening injuries, was speeding and that may have played a role in the crash. That driver has not been arrested or charged.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact BSO Traffic Homicide Detective Carlos De Jesus at 954-321-4842.
