HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. — At least eight people were injured in a crash involving a school bus and a semi Wednesday morning in Highlands County.
The school bus was carrying 29 students when it was struck in the rear by a tractor-trailer at 7:48 a.m. on U.S. 27 and Lake Placid Drive.
FHP reports that two students were airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries.
Additionally, Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Lake Placid says that they have received six patients, including the school bus driver, all with non-life threatening injuries. Hospital leaders have been notified more patients will be arriving. They do not know the extent of those injuries at this time.
A staging area for parents has been set up at the Winn Dixie parking lot on CR 29.
"Please do not come to the accident scene," HCSO posted on Facebook. "Stay in the staging area with your child until cleared to leave by a deputy."
The NB lanes of US 27 near Lake Ridge Drive are currently closed. FHP is currently on scene investigating.
