FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Broward County inmate who escaped from a health center in Fort Lauderdale has been taken into custody after leading authorities on a chase, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
Azmi Mahmoud fled from Davie police Wednesday afternoon when officers attempted a traffic stop of a BMW that was reported stolen during a carjacking in Hollywood, BSO Sgt. Donald Prichard said.
The pursuit crossed into Miami-Dade County, where Mahmoud was taken into custody near Northwest 42nd Avenue and the Gratigny Parkway.
Mahmoud escaped from the Henderson Behavioral Health facility after being transferred there from jail, per a court order.
The 46-year-old suspect was being held without bond for violation of probation charges that included battery on a person 65 or older, grand theft and possession of cocaine.
Mahmoud now faces additional charges of fleeing and eluding law enforcement and resisting arrest.
