Campaign to make roads safer for cyclists

Posted

Drivers will see more law enforcement vehicles patrolling A1A starting Monday. The South Florida Safe Roads Task Force is putting on a week-long safety awareness initiative.

Officers and deputies will line A1A from Jupiter to Fort Lauderdale, watching for unsafe drivers and talking to them about safety.

Law enforcement agencies are teaming up with the state's Department of Transportation for the safety initiative because of the high number of bicyclist fatalities in Florida.

The Sunshine State sees one of the highest numbers of accidents that result in bicyclist deaths in the country.

Officers and deputies will be speaking with drivers, educating them on safe driving habits.

Lighted message boards along the road will let drivers know about the safety initiative.
