(WESH/NBC) - Authorities say a 58-year-old man in Central Florida was injured after an alligator attacked him Tuesday.
The incident occurred in Sumter County after the resident found the gator on his property and shot it.
When he moved closer to make sure the reptile was dead, the 300-pound animal lunged at him, biting him in the right leg.
The man was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.
The alligator was euthanized by a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission gator trapper.
"We don't want these things to happen to. Alligator bites are a very rare occurrence, and we want to know what happened. How did this take place?" said Chad Weber with FWC.
