DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A gunman and a sheriff's deputy fired at each other following an earlier shooting at a South Florida nightclub.

Broward Sheriff's spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said in a news release that the deputy heard gunshots about 3 a.m. Monday at the Tropicante Night Club in Deerfield Beach. When the deputy arrived at the club, a gunman fired at him.

Coleman-Wright says the deputy returned fire, but it wasn't clear whether the suspect was hit. The suspect fled in a vehicle.

Deputies then found a shooting victim at the club. He was taken to a hospital and his condition isn't known.

Coleman-Wright says the deputy was taken to a hospital for an evaluation but is OK.

The names of the victim or the deputy haven't been released.
