When the clock strikes midnight law enforcement throughout the state of Florida will not only be looking for drunk drivers but those who are texting behind the wheel.
Earlier this year lawmakers banned texting and driving, but up until now they have been mostly issuing warnings to offenders.
“I won’t lie there’s definitely been times you know you’re sitting at a red light changing music or you know texting someone your on your way over. I know it’s not the right thing to do of course but you know you try to learn from your mistakes,” said Jupiter resident Tyler Murphy.
Since July 1, police officers have written 1,087 warnings. However, starting Jan. 1, 2020 those caught texting and driving can face fines and points on their license.
“I have a 16 year old who that just started driving and I know she doesn’t text and drive but I get nervous if she comes across someone who is,” said parent Joanna Millon.
Another illegal mistake that will cost you is using your phone in a school or active work zone.
The new law states you must use a hands free device whenever you’re near a school crossing, school zone or work zone.
