Hallandale Beach police to wear body cameras

Posted

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- The Hallandale Beach Police Department will become the first in Broward County to start wearing body cameras.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports officers will begin wearing the cameras Monday.

The use of body cameras is part of new reforms sweeping through the department. A year ago, Chief Dwayne Flournoy hired independent consultant Greenwood & Streicher to provide a review of the department's use of force. After the review, the consultant group came up with new guidelines aimed at improving relations with the public.

Flournoy says the department chose to hire the consultant on its own.

Hallandale Beach plans to equip 28 out of 100 officers with body cameras in the first year of the pilot program. The first group of 10 will start this week.
