FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a man captured on video surveillance stealing a woman's purse while she prayed at a church has been charged.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office says in a statement that 30-year-old Jonathan Somps was identified as the suspect in the Dec. 20 incident. He faces a grand theft charge after being arrested and accused of driving under the influence Jan. 15.
Deputies say the 84-year-old woman was praying at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church in North Lauderdale when a video captured the suspect sliding the victim's purse off of a chair that was next to her and rushing out.
Authorities say Somps was at the church attending a relative's baptism.
Somps was released on bond. It isn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.
