A suspect who was shot by an owner as he tried to steal an SUV died after a crash and tense police standoff in Miami Beach Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Miami Beach Police tweeted that several officers responded to the scene just west of Alton Road and 18th Street.

Footage showed officers with guns drawn surrounding a Mercedes SUV that had crashed into the side of the Office Depot at 1771 West Avenue.

Officials said there was a suspect inside the stolen vehicle. After a short time, officers approached the SUV and took the suspect out.

Rescue workers placed him in the back of an ambulance. Officials said he was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound. He later died at the hospital, officials said.

Police said the suspect had been shot by the owner of the SUV, who was having it washed when the suspect jumped in and drove off. The suspect got a couple blocks away when he crashed into the building.

Officials said the owner of the SUV was being questioned.
