Officials: Pole melted by brush fire falls on Florida road

Posted

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a brush fire in Florida had melted a light pole before it fell on a road and backed up traffic for roughly an hour.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports the fire had sent the pole crashing onto a Lakeland street Wednesday afternoon.

The state Highway Patrol and the city's fire and police departments were called out to the blaze. They found roughly a half-dozen palm trees fully engulfed in flames. Embers were also igniting trees nearby.

Police Officer Will Long says it looked like the fire started when someone flicked a lit cigarette out of their vehicle.
